Training update from Carrington

Manchester United's players have been photographed training at Carrington in advance of Wednesday night's Champions League assignment with Villarreal.

Although manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to give an update on the injury situation during his pre-match press conference, which will be covered live on the Official App, MUTV and from 13:30 BST, obviously some clues have been garnered from the open session.

Nonetheless, it is worth pointing out that those spotted do not necessarily form the squad for the tie and any absentees are not definitely ruled out of the Old Trafford occasion.

David De Gea and Nemanja Matic, who are one game away from a 50th personal appearance in the competition (from the group stage onwards), were among those taking part in the session.

Forwards Marcus Rashford and Amad were pictured in training but away from the main group.

Rashford posted on social media to indicate he is seeing the doctor on Friday in order to hopefully get the green light to resume contact training after shoulder surgery. Amad also published a photo from Carrington suggesting he was back out on the grass and stepping up his own recovery.

Two notable absentees were defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, who were both withdrawn with injuries during the 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka suspended, the back-four was always going to be altered but Ole could reveal more on the fitness of Shaw and Maguire, when talking to reporters this afternoon.

Villarreal coach Unai Emery will provide his own update on the Spanish team's squad around midday UK time.

He is holding a media briefing and is set to be asked about the travelling group, with doubts over the fitness of some key individuals, including Gerard Moreno, who scored in last season's Europa League final with the Reds.

The Yellow Submarine are still unbeaten in La Liga this season and secured a 2-2 draw with Atalanta in their opening Group F fixture.
