Treble Reunion: Midfield quartet announced

Thursday 14 March 2019 06:30

The Manchester United squad for the Treble Reunion match continues to take shape, with the midfield players joining the all-star line-up.

Members of the iconic Class of '92, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, will return to Old Trafford for the anniversary event on 26 May 2019, and will be joined by former Sweden winger Jesper Blomqvist in the Manchester United Legends' engine room.

The midfielders will be reunited with the 1998/99 defence, including the Neville brothers, Jaap Stam and Denis Irwin, with 'Great Dane' Peter Schmeichel back in goal for the anniversary match, in aid of Manchester United Foundation.

The squad, to be managed by legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson, will be completed by the announcement of the strikers in the coming weeks.

Paul Scholes celebrates his goal in the 1999 FA Cup final against Newcastle.
"I'm so excited to be going back to Old Trafford in May," said David Beckham. "1999 was such a massive year for us so recreating that moment is going to be really special. To be back together as a squad and to be managed by the boss again is huge. Huge for us and for the fans; I can't wait."

The Treble Reunion match will see Manchester United Legends take on FC Bayern Legends, exactly 20 years to the date when United emerged victorious at the Nou Camp in 1999, an incredible night on which the Champions League trophy was added to the Premier League and FA Cup.

The two teams will now meet once again in the anniversary match, with funds raised going towards Manchester United Foundation¹s work with young people across Greater Manchester.

Nicky Butt was a key member of the Treble-winning squad.
Former team-mate Nicky Butt added, "We're all really looking forward to coming back together again and playing this match for the Foundation, which is a really good cause. Hopefully we'll bring back some really good memories and everyone will really enjoy it."
Jesper Blomqvist started on the left wing in the 1999 Champions League final.

The 1998/99 season remains the most iconic season in the club's proud 140-year history and unsurpassed in English football, and fans can look forward to welcoming Sir Alex Ferguson and a host of Manchester United legends back to the Theatre of Dreams, including many of those who lined up against Bayern on that famous night in Barcelona in 1999.
