Manchester United Under-21s now know which group we are in for the 2023/24 EFL Trophy.

The young Reds have been drawn in Group E alongside Bolton Wanderers, Salford City and Stockport County.

Fans won't have to travel far for these fixtures, with all three teams residing in the Greater Manchester region.

Having reached the third round last season, United will look to go even further and earn more development opportunities against EFL opposition.

Comprised mostly of teams in the Football League, the EFL Trophy also includes Under-21 sides from invited clubs.

Other youth sides joining United in the Northern groups are from Everton, Liverpool, Leicester, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

The EFL teams were drawn out yesterday (Wednesday) and the invited sides have since been added to the respective groups, with the Reds now set to meet Bolton, Salford and Stockport when the tournament unfolds during the forthcoming new season.

Bolton were the side who knocked the young Reds out of the tournament in the third round last year, while Salford, of course, are part-owned by numerous members of the Class of '92, such as Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. Stockport are the third EFL side in the group, making it an all-Greater Manchester affair.

The first matchday of the 2023/23 EFL Trophy is pencilled in for the week commencing 4 September.

Teams will then play one group-stage game per month until December, when the Round of 32 will commence.
