Hugill up for January award

Friday 03 February 2023 10:30

Manchester United Under-21s striker Joe Hugill is on the shortlist for the Premier League 2’s Player of the Month, after an impressive January.

The young Reds won all four of our fixtures in the division over the month, defeating Fulham, Liverpool, West Ham and Blackburn.

In particular, Hugill was in scintillating form, scoring five goals across these matches, as the young Reds continued to make superb progress despite the youthful group at Mark Dempsey’s disposal.

The striker began the month by grabbing the pivotal strike in our 2-1 away victory at Fulham, before hitting a brace against rivals Liverpool eight days later.

Hugill also played a key role as the Reds came from two behind to beat West Ham in the capital, scoring another brace. Sonny Aljofree’s late header clinched all three points for United.

Joe’s form has seen him nominated for the January Player of the Month award for the Premier League 2, joining Southampton’s Dominic Ballard, Manchester City trio Carlos Borges, Adedire Mebude and Mikki Van Sas, Mason Burstow of Chelsea, Norwich’s Abu Kamara and West Ham’s Divin Mubama on the eight-man list.

The winner of the award, to be decided by the Premier League’s Football Development Panel, will be announced on Friday 10 February.

Good luck, Joe!
