Manchester United players celebrate one of five goals against West Brom in Premier League 2 Division 2

U23s: United v Reading could be a cracker

Thursday 15 August 2019 20:30

MUTV viewers and the fans at Leigh Sports Village could be in for a treat this Friday night when Manchester United and Reading meet at Under-23 level (kick-off 19:00 BST).

The two sides scored 11 goals between them in last week's opening Premier League 2 fixtures, with the Reds enjoying a thumping 5-0 away win against West Bromwich Albion and the Royals beating Newcastle United 6-0.

Largie Ramazani, D'Mani Mellor, James Garner (2) and Dylan Levitt were our scorers against the Baggies, three days after Ramazani and Ethan Laird both netted in the 2-0 victory at Rotherham United in the EFL Trophy, now called the Leasing.com Trophy.

Neil Wood will be hoping his young Reds can build on those two successes on the road, in the first home match of the new campaign. The squad will be missing at least two players, however, after Aidan Barlow and George Tanner headed out on loan to Tromso and Morecambe respectively during the week.

Meanwhile, Scott Marshall’s Reading side are currently perched above us in Premier League 2 Division 2 after beginning the season with that aforementioned bang at home to Newcastle.

Andrija Novakovich bagged a hat-trick, Thierry Nevers grabbed a brace and Tyler Frost also found the net as the Berkshire side marginally outscored the Reds to set up a very early top-of-the-table meeting.
LAST SEASON'S MEETINGS

The Reds met Reading three times at this level in 2018/19, resulting in one win apiece and a draw.

The first encounter, which took place in the league at Old Trafford, ended 1-1, but an Angel Gomes penalty ensured we won 1-0 at Madejski Stadium in the reverse fixture in December.

The Royals did, however, win the third contest of the season between the sides two months later, when first-team player Danny Loader bagged a hat-trick in a 3-1 Reading victory that eliminated the Reds from the Premier League International Cup.
Angel Gomes netted the winner from the spot at the Madejski last season.
