Pre-season plans for United Under-23s

Monday 05 July 2021 17:00

Manchester United's Under-23s have arranged a series of friendlies for the close season, to prepare for the new Premier League 2 campaign.

The youngsters will have a new-look squad, as always, for the upcoming term with several players being promoted from the successful Under-18s squad of 2020/21.

Nick Cox, United's Head of Academy, revealed the plans for the group when we spoke to him recently, saying: “A training camp in Scotland provides a great opportunity to get the Professional Development Phase group bonded together ahead of the new season.

“Pre-season is always an exciting time when everyone gets back together after the break. We’ll obviously have the new scholars with us as well and this is always a week they really enjoy.

“Building fitness in an excellent training environment, as well as playing a couple of behind closed-doors friendlies, before returning to Carrington will provide the ideal start to the new campaign.”

Following the spell in Scotland, there is a chance to honour former coach Bert Whalley, with a plaque being unveiled by Bryan Robson before the contest with Stalybridge Celtic on 27 July.

Further behind-closed-doors friendlies against EFL first-team sides will take place before a trip to the Midlands on 6 August, when Kidderminster Harriers will provide the opposition.
