United v Liverpool: How to watch and follow

Saturday 06 April 2024 11:00

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday as we face Liverpool in a 15:30 BST kick-off at Old Trafford.

It's less than a month since our rivals from Merseyside were last at the Theatre of Dreams, for that historic late United win in this season's Emirates FA Cup quarter-final, and this time around represents Jurgen Klopp's last visit as Liverpool boss.

There will be no extra-time drama in this league contest, but Erik ten Hag's side will be hoping to use this home fixture to get back to winning ways after a couple of tough results on the road.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the game...

TEAM NEWS

Thursday's trip to Stamford Bridge has added to an already difficult picture in United's defensive unit, with Raphael Varane's first-half departure in west London adding to the earlier news that both Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are set to be sidelined for at least a month.

It was Jonny Evans that came in to replace Varane against the Blues, but he also found issues of his own and had to be withdrawn for Willy Kambwala in the second half. If Varane and Evans are unavailable on Sunday, it will leave Harry Maguire and Kambwala as the only natural central defenders at Ten Hag's disposal.

There were concerns for Casemiro too, who also had to come off against Chelsea, but the recent return of long-term absentee Mason Mount should help to boost our midfield numbers.

Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have all faced long spells in the treatment room and are not expected to return for this match.

For Klopp's side, Ryan Gravenberch, Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones all returned from setbacks at various points throughout their midweek game against Sheffield United, with the manager confirming he's hopeful of a Wataru Endo comeback at Old Trafford after he missed the Blades bout.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker are closing in on a return to training but are expected to miss this clash and longer-term absentees Joel Matip and Thiago Alacantara will also be unavailable.

PAST MEETINGS

Old Trafford has proven a tough venue for Klopp's men in recent years, with last month's 4-3 FA Cup victory adding to our 2-1 Premier League win in this fixture last season, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford among the goals in that game.

The intense rivalry between the two sides always promises an entertaining clash, but two wins, two losses and a draw for United over the last five times the teams have faced each other suggests anything is possible on Sunday.

Rashford always relishes a challenge against a rival like Liverpool, having scored in both of those wins in the past five, so our no.10 is likely to be key this Sunday if the three points are to remain in Manchester.

FORM GUIDE

Late goals for both Brentford and Chelsea in our last two Premier League outings have been a blow, and our pursuit of Champions League football next season would be looking more positive this weekend were it not for those fine margins.

However, an opponent like Liverpool visiting Old Trafford is the perfect occasion to put those disappointments right and set the final run-in off strongly. Our FA Cup win over Klopp's men last month shows this side thrives under pressure and adversity, and Sunday could be the perfect opportunity to prove this once more.

Liverpool currently sit at the top of the league but could have dropped to third by the time we play on Sunday if Manchester City and Arsenal's results go against them. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in their last seven league fixtures, with Klopp's final season at Anfield providing strong motivation to get them over the finish line.

Their defeat at Old Trafford was the only loss they have faced in all competitions since the beginning of February.
