'Talk About It Mate' at our latest Warm Hub event

Monday 15 January 2024 16:32

Manchester United will welcome representatives from a local peer support group, Talk About It Mate, to Old Trafford for Monday’s Warm Hub to help overcome the stigma of talking about mental illness.

Old Trafford’s Red Cafe has been opened as a warm and welcoming place for members of the local community to gather for weekly Warm Hub evenings throughout the cold winter months.

Monday's Warm Hub will be focused on people struggling with their mental wellbeing who can benefit from the support provided by Talk About It Mate.

The middle Monday in January is often referred to as ‘Blue Monday,’ because of the attention placed on mental health and wellness issues at this time of year.

Tonight, between 5 and 8pm, alongside the regular offering of a warm space, food and soft drinks, the Red Cafe will also provide a welcoming and safe environment for attendees to interact with others and representatives from Talk About It Mate without judgement.

Talk About It Mate is a Manchester-based enterprise offering creative approaches to reducing the stigma around mental health and championing peer support in our everyday lives.

In addition to tonight’s warm hub the club and Manchester United Foundation continues to champion mental and emotional wellbeing through several initiatives such as the United Minds programme delivered across partner schools in Greater Manchester and further afield.

United Minds focuses on various areas to help our young people develop and reinforce positive habits relating to mental health. Lesson topics include self-reflection, managing emotions, and healthy coping strategies.

With younger age groups in the Academy, the club continues to undertake a range of activity to ensure mental fitness is talked about and developed in the same way physical fitness is with the next generation of stars.

  • Pat McGibbon – Speaking out after 20 years

     podcast

To kick off 2024 Sam, Helen & Maysie catch up with former Red and Northern Ireland international Pat McGibbon. Pat has an important story to tell, particularly at a time of year when a lot of people struggle with their mental health. Not long after joining United as a teenager, Pat learnt the tragic news of his brother Phillip taking his own life, which is something Pat hasn't spoken about until recently. He has begun to speak publicly about mental health issues, with the aim of increasing mental health awareness, reducing the stigma and promoting health and well-being through sport. Pat tells us about this heart-breaking time for his family and also how Manchester United offered him much needed structure in his life, helping him to focus on his football career again. It wasn't until after retirement when Pat started to really struggle with his own mental health. We're pleased to say that Pat has turned things around and is now a mental health and wellbeing coach/mentor. In Phillip's honour, Pat founded the charity TRAIN 2 B SMART (TTBS) Juniors, who aim to promote positive mental health and well-being through sport. TTBS have affiliated boys and girls teams at a range of age groups. The aim of the charity is to educate through seminars, workshops, play and to inspire the local/ wider community.
