Skinner named WSL Manager of the Month

Manchester United Women head coach Marc Skinner has been named the Barclays WSL Manager of the Month, following an enthralling April with the Reds.

It's the third time Skinner has won the award this season, following his recognition in October and December, and the announcement comes as he prepares to lead the team into our first-ever Women's FA Cup final at Wembley this Sunday.

United were in league action thrice last month and came through with a 100 percent record and maximum points.

We currently sit at the top of the WSL table, but reigning champions Chelsea have been rapidly closing the gap with ruthless showings in their games in hand over us - including Wednesday night's 6-0 home drubbing of Leicester City.

Marc Skinner praises the attitude of his players after Sunday's Women's Super League win over Spurs...

Our first April outing was an away trip to Brighton on the south coast, where the Reds were rampant in a 4-0 win. A Leah Galton brace was enough to see us on our way, before late strikes from second-half substitutes Rachel Williams and Lucia Garcia.

Next up was a visit from Arsenal at Leigh Sports Village, where we sought to become just the third team ever to do the league double over the Gunners after a thrilling 3-2 win at the Emirates back in November.

Alessia Russo’s sole strike of the evening was enough to secure all three points for United, with a resilient display at the back helping us over the line.
We saw out the month at Walsall against a tricky Aston Villa side, who have been in flying form under Carla Ward. Rachel Daly headed home the opener, before Galton was on target to pull us level.

Daly’s sweeping volley restored the Villans' lead just before the break, but Hannah Blundell and Nikita Parris combined for our second equaliser of the night after half-time.

Just when it looked like the three points may be out of reach, Millie Turner rose tallest to nod home Katie Zelem’s free-kick at the death, prompting pure elation from Skinner and his coaching staff as well as the players and fans in away end of course.

Suffice to say, April had a little bit of everything for the Reds.

Congratulations on your award, Marc!
