Result: Women’s Goal of the Month for September
Leah Galton’s effort against West Ham has been chosen as Manchester United Women’s Goal of the Month for September 2024.
Galton’s goal, the second in our 3-0 win over the Hammers, topped the poll on ManUtd.com and in the United App to become the first winner of our dedicated Women’s Goal of the Month prize.
It received a majority 38 per cent of the vote, to finish ahead of the team’s three other strikes in a month that the Reds backed up the aforementioned triumph by beating Everton 1-0.
Galton's Goal of the Month
Women's Goal of the Month | Leah Galton's latest Old Trafford strike is a worthy winner of September's award...
Making her return to competitive action after sustaining an ankle injury in last season’s FA Cup final, Galton played at left-back in the contest with West Ham, but that did not stop her getting forward to produce a moment of fine attacking brilliance in first-half stoppage time.
Our no.11’s run to the left edge of the 18-yard box was picked out by an incisive pass from Millie Turner, before the former got the ball under control, worked her way inside, shifted it on to her weaker right foot and reversed a successful low shot back past goalkeeper Kinga Szemik.
It put United 2-0 up at the time while, for Leah, it was her second goal in M16, having previously netted at the stadium against Aston Villa in 2022 – another impressive finish in front of the East Stand.
Galton admitted in the week after the win that she had watched her latest Old Trafford highlight on multiple occasions, while also praising Turner for her role in setting it up.
“I’ve seen it a few times,” Leah joked with club media’s Helen Rowe-Willcocks. “Me and Millie had a conversation numerous times to play a one-two down the side instead of switching out and I was saying to her: ‘Millie, play it back!’ And on this one she did.
“I thought it was a great ball from Mil to be fair. Everyone always tells me shoot more, so I took a shot on the edge of the box.
“It was my right foot as well which was a bit of a shock, but you can see how me and Millie celebrated, it was because we’d been talking about it.”
Our no.11's goal topped the poll ahead of Geyse’s opener in the victory over the Hammers (24 per cent) and Grace Clinton’s header which completed the scoring on that day (23 per cent).
Clinton, who was earlier announced as our supporters’ Player of the Month, had two contenders in the running, with her matchwinner at Everton receiving a further 15 per cent of all selections.
United Women’s standout goals had previously been included on the shortlists for our club-wide Goal of the Month prizes, but this season, fans will have the opportunity to pick a favourite from both the men’s and women’s teams.
Thank you to everyone who got involved in the inaugural edition of the latter, and congratulations to Leah on winning it.
