Women's international round-up

Manchester United Women had more than a dozen representatives across Monday and Tuesday's international fixtures, rounding off the break from domestic duties.

Maya Le Tissier made her first start at Wembley Stadium for England earlier in this international break, and Sarina Wiegman gave our captain the nod once again in the Lionesses' friendly against Ghana at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton.

She was joined in the starting XI by Jess Park, in a relatively young side, with Ella Toone an unused substitute. England won the meeting 2-0, with Aston Villa midfielder Lucia Kendall netting the opener, and former Red Alessia Russo notching the second from the spot in stoppage-time.

Sweden played the second match of a two-legged third-place Nations League play-off against France, going into the clash 2-1 down. The two nations met Stockholm at the 3Arena, and the Swedes forced the game into extra-time through goals from substitutes Evelyn Ijeh and Rosa Kafaji.

Anna Sandberg started the game, along with Julia Zigiotti, who showed a steely determination with nine tackles made in the match, more than any other player on the pitch, and Fridolina Rolfo, who was withdrawn on the hour mark. Sadly, however, their efforts were undone in the extra period, with Kelly Gago levelling the match for France, enough to hand Les Bleues the win on aggregate, who had Melvine Malard on the bench throughout.

The United Women midfielder impressed fans again in November, and has another trophy to show for it.

There was success for Wales on Tuesday evening, who ended a 12-game winless run after securing a 3-2 victory over Switzerland, with Safia Middleton-Patel between the sticks. The goalkeeper was joined in her defensive duties by former United duo Hayley Ladd and Gemma Evans, with Mared Griffiths introduced as a 76th minute substitute for Southampton forward Rachel Rowe.

Dominique Janssen started in the backline in a dominant Netherlands display against South Korea, emerging 5-0 victors with Vivianne Miedema, who plays for crosstown rivals Manchester City, scoring four of those goals.

It was an altogether quieter affair for Norway, who faced Denmark in a friendly in southern Spain, near the border with Gibraltar. Lisa Naalsund and Elisabeth Terland started the game, but were unable to break down the Danes in the goalless draw.

Japan met Canada in the second of two friendlies between the sides, with Simi Awujo introduced as a second-half substitute for the latter, and Jayde Riviere remaining on the bench.

Awujo came up against Reds team-mate Hinata Miyazawa once on the pitch, after Hini was brought on for Narumi Miura at half-time.

Japan won the contest 1-0, courtesy of a Mina Tanaka goal.
