Who was Player of the Match against Wolves?

Saturday 08 February 2025 19:47

Manchester United put six goals past Wolves in the Adobe Women's FA Cup fifth round on Saturday evening, with a number of players impressing as the Reds reached the quarter-finals again.

There were landmark moments for Leah Galton, who scored on her milestone 150th United appearance, and Aoife Mannion, who got her first goal for the club in the Midlands rout. Elisabeth Terland netted for the second time in a week, Millie Turner was a force in both boxes, and Melvine Malard was also heavily involved.

Mared Griffiths, the 17-year-old making her senior debut, scored twice in the closing stages to make it a truly memorable occasion. The Welsh teenager reacted quickest to Wolves stopper Bec Thomas spilling the ball for her first, and United's fifth, before a measured volley squirmed through the goalkeeper's grasp in stoppage time.

United progressed to the Adobe Women's FA Cup quarter-finals with victory in Shropshire.

That contribution from the bench earned Griffiths a substantial 21 per cent of the fan vote in our player of the match poll.

But there was one star performance that supporters loved even more, and it came from Ella Toone. Our no.7 continued her outstanding start to 2025 and earned the recognition of 41 per cent of fans casting their vote.

After a Manchester derby hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium, and other strikes against West Brom and Brighton in January, Toone netted her sixth goal in five appearances since the turn of the year at the New Bucks Head.

The strike was United's fourth of the game, following quickly on from Mannion making it 3-0 shortly after half-time. But it wasn't only that powerful strike from distance that made Toone an obvious contender as the tie's top player.

Tooney scored an excellent goal.

She was at the heart of United's creativity and attacking play from the earliest exchanges, carving out our first chance of the game with a shot that narrowly missed.

Another effort was cleared away just in front of the goal-line in the build-up to the breakthrough opening goal, while an awkward shot was also grasped by Thomas.

Wolves ultimately couldn't live with Toone and she proved pivotal in the victory.
