United Women to play Aston Villa at Old Trafford

Thursday 11 August 2022 14:00

Manchester United Women will face Aston Villa Women at Old Trafford in the Barclays Women’s Super League in December, providing another opportunity for fans to watch top-flight women’s football at the Theatre of Dreams.

The WSL fixture on Saturday December 3 will be the third women’s fixture at Old Trafford this year, after United’s WSL encounter with Everton Women in March and England’s victory over Austria in the sold-out opening game of the UEFA Women’s European Championships in July.

Almost 100,000 fans were in attendance across those two games and another big crowd will be expected in December, as enthusiasm for the women’s game continues to grow.

England Lionesses Mary Earps, Ella Toone, Alessia Russo and Nikita Parris are among those who could feature for United, along with a host of other internationals, rising stars and new faces in Marc Skinner’s team.
The Reds finished fourth in the WSL last season, narrowly missing out on a top-three finish on the final day of the campaign. This summer has seen United strengthen the dressing room, welcoming seven new additions to the side.

The Villa game will be the third played by Manchester United Women at Old Trafford – but only the second with fans in the stadium after the historic match with Everton Women in March attracted the biggest WSL crowd of the season. The visit of West Ham Women to the Theatre of Dreams in the campaign prior was held behind closed doors.

Marc Skinner, United Women's head coach, said: “We cannot wait to perform in front of our amazing fans, as we once again grace the hallowed Old Trafford turf.

"As a club we are dedicated to playing our part in the continued growth of the women’s game and a packed Old Trafford will be another great milestone for this fantastic football club - and a wonderful occasion for us all to share.”

John Murtough, Manchester United football director, added: “This will be a fantastic occasion for the players, fans and football club, as we build on the success of the Everton Women fixture at Old Trafford last season and the excitement generated by the Lionesses victorious UEFA Women’s European Championship campaign this summer.”
