The Debate: Could Elanga start again?

Monday 17 January 2022 17:11

Manchester United starlet Anthony Elanga has been tipped to start at Brentford on Wednesday night, after catching the eye with two energetic performances against Aston Villa last week.

The talented youth product made an industrious cameo in the Emirates FA Cup victory at Old Trafford and then took his place in Ralf Rangnick’s XI for the Premier League draw at Villa Park.

United are currently preparing for the rearranged trip to Brentford in midweek and, in our latest episode of The Debate, former Academy graduate Danny Webber says his fellow forward has earned his opportunities.

“I thought Anthony was very good, I do,” says Webber. “I was glad when I saw him on the team sheet because he showed enough in his little cameo in the game before to warrant him coming in, with the energy he showed and the desire to win headers, to run and cause problems.”

The Debate panel focus on Anthony Elanga’s status, January transfers and Brentford away in our latest episode…

“I thought he was brilliant [in the FA Cup] so I was glad that he came in on Saturday. I thought he had some good moments as well and I just like how he plays with that freedom. He has not quite got the pressure on his shoulders yet that some of the other lads might be playing with.

“He has got that youthful freedom, he goes out and he expresses himself. It was a bold move from Ralf as well, but one that was fully earned by Anthony, not just since Ralf has come into the building, but from pre-season and when he has been waiting for his opportunity. Hopefully he can get more game time, and start scoring goals and creating them for the first team.”
David May has also been impressed by Elanga’s energetic displays and, while Anthony needs time to develop, the former centre-back believes he has done enough to feature against Brentford.

“When you look at Anthony when he came on against Villa, within the 10 minutes he was absolutely outstanding and he did exactly what we wanted to do from the beginning of the game, taking on the full-backs,” says May in The Debate.

“He played so well again on Saturday. For me, absolutely 100 per cent, I would start him [against Brentford[ and I think he deserves another go. He is in the squad now, the manager trusts him, he believes him and the fans want to see him as well.

“You look on social media after the game on Saturday and Monday, and everybody said how good he was. Stick him in there again, absolutely. 100 per cent.”
