A youthful Manchester United XI is to take on Gainsborough Trinity in a pre-season friendly next month.

The clash, to be held at The Northolme, will form an important part of the preparation for the Academy campaign, one that will include matches against senior opposition in the Papa Johns Trophy.

Gainsborough, a former Football League club, are currently in the Northern Premier League's Premier Division and are coached by player-manager Neal Bishop.

The clubs' 20 competitive meetings between 1896 and 1906 include our historic first fixture as Manchester United on 6 September 1902, following the change of name from Newton Heath. The Reds won 1-0 at The Northolme, with Charlie Richards scoring the only goal.

The young Reds will soon learn our opponents in the EFL Trophy and the UEFA Youth League.

The friendly in Lincolnshire is to be played on Saturday 15 July, kicking off at 15:00 BST.

Admission prices are £10 for adults, concessions £6 and under-16s will be charged £4 for entry. Booking details are available on Gainsborough's official website.

The Reds team is likely to be largely made up of members of next term's Under-18s squad, and should provide valuable experience for the youngsters.

Players from that age group are also travelling to Northern Ireland for the SuperCup:NI tournament in July.
