United announce Old Trafford friendly
Manchester United will play French Ligue 1 runners-up RC Lens in a pre-season friendly to be hosted at Old Trafford this summer.
Like United, Lens have qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League group stages after finishing a point behind champions Paris Saint Germain last season, providing Erik ten Hag’s side with a high-level test ahead of the new campaign.
The match, to be played on Saturday 5 August, will be the only pre-season game at Old Trafford this summer, offering a fantastic opportunity for fans to see the Reds fine-tune our preparations for the 2023/24 season, just nine days before our Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It will be the first meeting between United and Lens, although the clubs share a connection through United’s French World Cup-winning centre-back Raphaël Varane, who started his professional career at Lens.
The match completes United’s line-up of pre-season games, with fixtures against an array of European opposition in Oslo, Edinburgh, Dublin and a four-match tour of the US, with stops in New York, San Diego, Houston and Las Vegas.
Manchester United’s football director, John Murtough, said: “This is our final pre-season game to be announced, with a full schedule of exciting and competitive fixtures scheduled during our summer preparations.
“We have worked with Erik and his coaching staff to create the best opportunities to prepare for the 2023/24 campaign. This includes utilising some of the best sporting facilities in the US, as well as gaining valuable match playing time against some strong opponents, including teams we could face in the Champions League next season.
“Having finished second in Ligue 1 last season, just one point behind winners PSG, we look forward to welcoming RC Lens to Old Trafford, in what will be an entertaining, competitive match for our fans.”
Kicking off at 12:45 BST, Manchester United v RC Lens is an opportunity for all the family to see a match at Old Trafford. Ticket prices start from £25 for adults, with Season Ticket Holders, Executive Club Members and Official Members receiving a £5 discount if personally attending. All Under 16s are priced at just £10.
