Mason Greenwood celebrates his late goal against FC Toronto.

Dallas Cup: Greenwood secures United win

Tuesday 27 March 2018 09:38

Mason Greenwood scored a late goal to earn 10-man Manchester United a 1-0 win over FC Toronto in the Dallas Cup.

D'Mani Mellor's red card, harshly awarded for a high boot on Dante Campbell in the 32nd minute, left the Reds up against it in Texas, following the opening 2-2 draw with Tigres.

Victory was required in order to keep hopes of progression from the group stages alive but Joshua Bohui was denied a decent shout for a penalty.

Greenwood, who also netted against Tigres, came off the bench to claim the vital strike in the 85th minute, following approach work from another substitute, Tahith Chong.

United move on to four points, level with Mexicans Tigres, with only the group winners assured of a semi-final spot. The best second-placed side will also reach the last four so goal difference could prove crucial.

The Reds' final group fixture against Japan's Higashi Fukuoka will be played on Wednesday, amid forecasts of storms for the next few days.
