A wreath in tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.

United to say farewell to Sir Bobby Charlton

Thursday 09 November 2023 15:00

The funeral of Sir Bobby Charlton will take place at Manchester Cathedral on Monday 13 November at 14:00 GMT.

The funeral cortege will pass Old Trafford on its way to the cathedral, and fans and members of the public are invited to pay their respects along the route.

Those coming to Old Trafford are advised to use the E2 car park and arrive at the East Stand forecourt from 13:00, with the funeral procession expected to pass in front of the Trinity Statue at 13:30.

The funeral cortege will then travel to Manchester Cathedral for the service, which will begin at 14:00.

It is expected that up to 1,000 guests will attend the cathedral to pay their respects to Sir Bobby and celebrate his incredible life as a husband, father, grandfather and, of course, as one of the finest footballers this country has ever produced.

The service will be led by Canon Nigel Ashworth and include eulogies by family members and the football club.

The service within the cathedral will remain private and will not be broadcast or filmed.

The Charlton family and Manchester United would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and respect towards Sir Bobby.

The family request no flowers. Instead, if you wish to donate in lieu of flowers, the charities close to Sir Bobby and his family's hearts are:

Welcome to a special episode of the Manchester United Podcast. Today we commemorate one of our most beloved sons, Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away on 21 October at the age of 86. There are no superlatives worthy of describing just how much Sir Bobby’s contribution to the club is valued and similarly, there are no words to articulate just how profound and sad this loss is to everyone associated with Manchester United. In this episode, Sam, Helen and Maysie present a selection of their favourite Sir Bobby Charlton stories, told by previous guests of the United Podcast. One thing is obvious and shines through these stories… the respect, admiration and affection that everybody holds for Sir Bobby Charlton. The greatest: he will never be forgotten.
