Manchester United Women celebrate winning the Women's Championship title

Women's Player of the Year: The nominees

Friday 03 May 2019 17:00

After a record-breaking campaign for Manchester United Women as a team, it's time to pick an individual for the Player of the Year award.

The first part of the difficult process - deciding a shortlist of three names - has been done already, by the women's squad themselves.

Casey Stoney's players have put forward the following trio for you, the fans, to choose from by voting in the official app:

Leah Galton

Millie Turner

Katie Zelem

Voting will close at 23:59 BST on Wednesday 8 May and the winner will be announced at Thursday's awards ceremony, which will be shown live in the official app.

Two days later, the Reds will play Lewes Women at Leigh Sports Village, to wrap up a record-breaking campaign. Stoney's side have, of course, stormed to the FA Women's Championship title this term after winning all but two of the league fixtures so far.

The title winners also enjoyed runs to the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres Cup and Women's FA Cup respectively and are looking forward to facing the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea after securing promotion to the Women's Super League for next season.

LEAH GALTON - 20 APPEARANCES, 3 GOALS

An ever-present threat down the wing this season, Leah Galton arrived in Manchester with a wealth of experience from playing in the USA and Germany.

Her first strike came in our Continental Tyres Cup tie against Everton when her looping header from a Lauren James delivery fell gracefully into the net.

However, it was towards the end of the campaign when Leah hit a purple patch of form, scoring a header in a 5-1 win over fellow promotion chasers Tottenham Hotspur and providing a Goal of the Month contender when she turned Crystal Palace's defence inside out before netting from an almost impossible angle.

MILLIE TURNER - 28 APPEARANCES, 2 GOALS

A rock in United's defence, Millie Turner has appeared for the Reds in every single game this season. In her 28 appearances, the 22-year-old centre-back helped Casey Stoney's side keep 20 clean sheets en route to the Women's Championship.

Turner, who arrived in the summer from Women's Super League outfit Bristol City, also chipped in with two goals during the campaign and scored her first for the club in our 5-0 away win at London Bees in mid-September, after staying up from a corner and heading in from Katie Zelem's floated cross.

Millie would have to wait seven months for her next goal, which also came in a thumping 5-0 win; the defender rose to head home Alex Greenwood's corner from the left, in our promotion-clinching game against Aston Villa at Leigh Sports Village.

KATIE ZELEM - 25 APPEARANCES, 11 GOALS

A former Juventus midfielder, Katie Zelem has been a goal and assist machine throughout United Women's promotion campaign.

The 23-year-old from Oldham scored in our emphatic 12-0 victory over Aston Villa and went on to bag a further 10 goals. And if Katie wasn't scoring herself, the midfielder was often creating chances for her grateful team-mates.

Throughout the season, Zelem has been a set-piece specialist with her corners and free kicks more often than not leading to goals. A standout goal from Katie would be her stunning free kick against Everton in the Continental Tyres Cup which arrowed into the top corner to give the Reds a 3-0 lead against the Toffees. This strike was nominated for United's Goal of the Month for December.

Her performances on the field in the latter part of the season were recognised nationally when Katie won the FA Women's Championship Player of the Month award for March.
