What Amorim told Ugarte

Manuel Ugarte was one of Manchester United's standout performers in the Premier League Summer Series win over West Ham.

The Reds started our pre-season tour of the USA with victory, beating the Hammers 2-1 in New Jersey - and Ugarte was instrumental in helping gain the three points.

Manu was a constant pest, hassling and harrying the Londoners to win the ball back. He could have had an assist as well, if Amad's first-half finish from the Uruguayan's incisive pass hadn't been ruled out.

After the game, Manuel spoke to MUTV - opting to do it in English for the first time, rather than his native tongue - and explained that the way he played against West Ham is exactly what Ruben Amorim demands of him every day.

Ugarte: Communication is important!

Manuel Ugarte's display against West Ham was impressive, as is the way he talks in his first interview in English...

"[Ruben] always says about the communication," revealed the midfielder.

"Speak to everyone and work as a team and try to recover the ball as soon as possible. I think tonight, not only me, the team played really well."

Ugarte is enjoying his first full pre-season with United, having arrived from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of August last summer. Being in the United States, he says, highlights the sheer size of the Reds' fanbase.

"In the USA, there are a lot of United fans," he said.

"We can see every day, in the hotel and the street.

"It is important to understand where we are. We are enjoying it but we have a lot of responsibility."

Amorim: Places still up for grabs

Amorim also spoke about Ugarte, who played under him at Sporting, during his press conference.

"The first thing is adaptation to a new team, a new country," he said. "Sometimes, you just look inside of the pitch but, off the pitch, you can have some trouble sometimes.

"He is more adapted and then he needs more confidence, it's also my job. If you look last year, take Bruno [Fernandes], who is always confident and look at the team, and the performance of the team if he doesn't perform well. We can see today, when they are confident in their play, it seems like everyone can touch the ball and have confidence. it is more a team thing than individual."
