What Marc said after League Cup win over Spurs

Sunday 21 December 2025 16:30

Marc Skinner was delighted with his Manchester United team after our comeback win against Spurs in the quarter-final of the League Cup.

United went behind in the first half through a brilliant Drew Spence volley before Jess Park and Fridolina Rolfo found the target to secure a 2-1 victory.

It means Skinner's Reds head into the New Year in a good position, in all four competitions, with the FA Cup due to start alongside the continuation of our WSL, Champions League and League Cup campaigns.

Skinner: I had absolute belief we'd come back

Marc Skinner reacts to his team's comeback win against Spurs...

WIN MEANS A LOT

"I was really happy with the performance. Obviously, Tottenham, we played against them last week, they showed their resilience and quality. They go ahead through a fantastic goal from Drew, although we'll be a little bit disappointed from our defensive situation. It means a lot to us [this win], because it sees us through to the semi-finals of the League Cup. Now it's time for reflection for us and how we can hit the second half of the season with aggression and take on those four competitions."

HALF-TIME TEAM-TALK

"I said to them at half-time, I need more aggression. I need more focus, and finish your purposeful chances, be aggressive in every action and if you do that, we'll dominate the game. Tottenham are resilient, they have good players, they can catch you on the break. First half, Phallon made an incredible save, that shows how far she's risen, she's a big-time goalkeeper and we needed her. I want to say about the whole team, I had absolute belief in them that we would get back in it."

WE'RE NOT NICE TO PLAY AGAINST

"When you get the goal and you take your opportunities, it put Spurs in a different psychological space. After the week before they'll understand just how aggressive we can be and that's not nice to play against so it put them on the back foot. We knew we could unlock them and we found a way to do that."

PRAISE FOR ROLFO

"Frido's had a run with this team the last three games and she's made a massive impact. When she's central as well she's a real threat. She's brought a lot of what we expected, quality, experience and a lot of energy to the team as well so congratulations to her for the first half of the year but I expect more in the second half!"

ARSENAL AWAY IN THE SEMIS

"It's another good team. Sometimes the League Cup is harder than the FA Cup because you have to play Tottenham, Arsenal, then if you beat them you play another good team, so even though it's a shorter run it can be a harder task. I said at half-time, if you want to be a winning team show me what we need to do and, of course, my team answer. I'm pleased to be going into [the break] having qualified for the Champions League in a seeded position, to be into the semi-finals of the League Cup, in touching distance in the league and of course we've not started in the FA Cup. I'm really proud of everybody involved, the staff, the club and obviously the players."

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

"Thank you to all the fans, because what you give us is this energy, we've felt a shift this year. We're in Europe, our fans have a high expectation and they want to win every game but they've been with us in every game when we needed them, and that's been the difference this year. There's been a positive energy around the place and I want us to continue that as a collective in the New Year."
