Skinner: Selection headaches are a great problem to have

Marc Skinner says it is great to have a "selection headache" going into the Women’s Super League game against West Ham on Sunday.

United put on an impressive performance in a 7-0 victory over Everton in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Thursday night, with a hat-trick for Nikita Parris.

Leah Galton and Geyse also got their first goals of the season and Skinner is happy to see the competition for places across our squad, having made eight changes to the side that started last weekend's draw at Brighton.

He spoke to the press on Friday morning ahead of this weekend's meeting with West Ham...

PICKING OUR STARTING XI

"It’s a welcome problem [having a selection headache]. When we have played before we have not necessarily had that fluid performance.

"What is key is that we are actually picking up and getting better from when we were at Brighton.

"We drew against Brighton [last Sunday] but we created as many chances as we did against Everton.

"I have asked the players to be ruthless in both boxes and I felt we were. Credit to all the players.

"We had loads of great stories with Nikita [Parris scoring three], Phallon [Tullis-Joyce] and Evie [Rabjohn making their debuts].

"I thought Gemma [Evans] was excellent and Geyse got her first goal so there are loads of those little stories. They deserved it. We converted the chances we hadn’t in previous games."

WEST HAM

"I think they have recruited pretty well seeing as Rehanne [Skinner] did not have a lot of time to do that. I know they won’t be happy about the Bristol City result [lost 3-2] but they have been playing really well.

"They will be as dangerous as any team we have played so far. We have absolute respect for them but we have to play the way we play. We have got to maximise the spaces they give us. We have to be ruthless to finish our chances.

"I think Rehanne will be really happy with her team at the minute. Even looking at the Chelsea game, I felt like there were large parts of the game where they could have taken a different result from that game.

"They will be a tough opponent and one which will be really difficult to navigate."

DROPPED POINTS IN THE LEAGUE

"We know that we were disappointed against Brighton.

"We could have been a lot more intelligent. It’s not a loss but it’s dropped points. In this league you have to win the games.

"I have enjoyed the way that we are creating chances. I want to see the consistency and I want to demand that from our players.

"Our crosses need to be better at times but we are getting in the right positions."
