Marc Skinner

Skinner: Our fans are with us in every game

Friday 19 May 2023 12:24

Manchester United Women head coach Marc Skinner believes our fans have mastered the ability to influence games, in both good and bad moments.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, the boss praised our ever-growing fan base for their vocal presence, both home and away.

“At Manchester United, I feel that they’re [the fans] actually part of the planning process,” he said.

“The fact you’ve got this extra support, this extra movement, this extra energy.”

Marc Skinner discusses the influence our fans can have over games ahead of Sunday's 'huge' Manchester derby...

“I can continuously bank on them to be an energy giver to our team and be something that drives us in both good and bad times.

“This season [we’ve] felt that there’s such a huge shift and they are absolutely with us in every kick of the game.”
With just two games left of the WSL season, Skinner’s side are still in the running for the title, making it among the most important derbies we’ve had to date.

“It’s a huge game,” Marc said. “We want to win it, Manchester City want to win, the fans on both sides want to win it, the players want to win it.

“But the reality is we’ve just played a really big game [the FA Cup final v Chelsea], so we’re going to play it in the same mindset.”

The boss is expecting a tough encounter against a ‘very good’ City side, who will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last time out.

“We know City are a very good team, it’s a heavyweight contest. One big punch and the other can be knocked out.

“We have to try and land those punches if we can, but it’ll be great.”

Skinner also issued a brief team news update, with all players bar Maria Thorisdottir – who has been ruled out for the season – available for selection as things stand, including Lisa Naalsund who has recently returned from injury.

“Everyone is okay, Lisa trained fully,” he told the press. “It probably wasn’t right to use Lisa [last] weekend but she’s ready and available for selection for the two games coming up.

“Everyone is good and hopefully that continues.”
