Skinner: That was a United display

Saturday 01 April 2023 17:09

Marc Skinner believes his side put on the performance of "a Manchester United team" in today’s comprehensive 4-0 win over Brighton away from home.

A brace from Leah Galton and late strikes from Rachel Williams and Lucia Garcia secured all three points as we extended our lead at the top of the WSL table.

“We’re calm and focused [on the sidelines] because we know that the team can produce that,” Skinner told MUTV at full-time.

“Whoever we put in, we know we can produce that.”

Skinner's assessment of win at Brighton

United Women head coach Marc Skinner says he "can ask for no more" after his team's 4-0 triumph on the south coast...

Skinner continued: “The first 60 minutes was a slog, but then our qualities turned up. It’s the work done in the first 60 that gets you the last part of the game.

“But what I loved, more importantly, was the energy of the girls right at the very end.

“They were still pressing, chasing, forcing mistakes: that’s a Manchester United team.”
Williams, who headed home from close range for our third, was brought on early in the second half as Skinner explains that we continued to adapt to the game and our surroundings.

“What I love about our team, is that they continue to play our style even through the most difficult [circumstances],” he said. “We had to adapt a little bit, that’s why we brought Rachel into the game.

“When it’s a little bit muddy and [the ball] is bouncing everywhere, we thought: 'Let's put them in behind', and Rach chased them down.

“Credit to all of the players, to come away [and win] 4-0 is a really, really great result.”

The boss also took a minute to highlight the contributions of Galton, whose brace set us on our way to three points today.

“Leah has been fantastic ever since I’ve been here,” he told us. “She’s really kicked into gear at the right time.

“She’s a huge part of what we do and one of the very best I’ve worked with in terms of left-sided players.”

A comprehensive victory for the Reds on the south coast sees us go three points clear at the top of the WSL.

With every other WSL team playing on Sunday, the Reds now sit three points clear at the top of the table with a considerable goal difference built up, too.

Skinner insists that he’s not interested in following the games of our rivals too closely though, adding: “I’m [only] interested in the girls and their performances.

“We’ll see what the results are at the end of tomorrow, but we are just here to do our job, stay focused and produce performances like that.”
