Skinner: We played well as a team

Thursday 14 December 2023 22:35

Marc Skinner was pleased with Manchester United's team display in our 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Thursday, but insists there are still areas we need to work on.

The Reds continued their unbeaten run in the Continental Tyres League Cup, with three points this evening taking us to the top of Group B.

Lucia Garcia, Lisa Naalsund and Katie Zelem were all on the scoresheet, but an error at the back allowed the Foxes to briefly get back into proceedings.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Skinner highlighted the key areas United need to build on following a positive team display...

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS…

"We knew we could eliminate Leicester from our group tonight and we needed to do that. There was a lack of controlling the game from the players. It was a positive result. It was a bit sloppy from both teams. It was one of those games we had to win. We got off to a great start. It almost made us a bit to complacent. We had a moment where we have to wake up and then Leicester are back in the game. For me, we need to manage the game a bit better but it was a blistering start. There are areas where we want to improve, we got the job done. No injuries and three points so that’s good."

ON LEICESTER’S GOAL…

"The goal disturbed the rhythm a little bit and we will own that. We will move forwards. What we need to own more than that is that when a team get back a bit of momentum we need to get back together, control the game and get back in charge. Towards the end of the game we got a lot more control and I thought we looked a lot more comfortable. We gave them far too much. Leicester were aggressive, tried to press us all over the park but I think that we as a team played well. There were some good individual performances but also things to improve."

ON MISSED CHANCES…

"We should have [taken our chances]. We created enough chances to win the game by seven or eight and that’s great, you want to win by that many. You don’t want to concede. It’s one of those games where we allowed a little bit too much control to slip. We will review it, we didn’t play badly but there is stuff to improve."
