Confirmed: Rashford out of England squad

England head coach Gareth Southgate has confirmed Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has withdrawn from the Three Lions squad.

The Reds forward has failed to shrug off an ankle injury in time to face Czech Republic at Wembley on Friday and he will also be absent from the next Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro on Monday night.

Despite scoring in the 2-1 Emirates FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Wolves last Saturday, Rashford has been struggling with the problem and is returning to Manchester for more treatment.

Marcus Rashford scores United's consolation goal at Wolves last weekend.

"He's been with the medical team all week," said Southgate at a press conference. "We’ve tried to progress his training through the week, so he did some running with them.

"It's clear to us he's not ready for our matches, so we have sent him back to his club. He is out of the two games."

Although he worked hard to regain fitness at St George's Park, the 21-year-old will not be able to add to his tally of 6 goals in 31 caps for his country.

With Luke Shaw also forced to return to the Aon Training Complex after initially being called up by England, the United duo presumably could be facing a race against time to be fit for our next Premier League outing - at home to Watford on Saturday 30 March.
