Rashford: Amad's been working hard

Marcus Rashford has stated his belief that Amad's last-gasp extra-time winner in the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool is the perfect way to earn himself further opportunities in the side.

It was a dramatic St Patrick's Day clash against arch-rivals Liverpool, which saw Erik ten Hag's side go down twice in the game before Amad broke on the counter with fellow winger Alejandro Garnacho in the last minute of extra-time.

Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area from the Argentina international, Amad expertly placed the ball beyond the grasp of Caoimhin Kelleher in stoppage time; a goal so climactic that the 21-year-old forgot he had already been booked and received a second yellow card for removing his shirt during the chaotic celebrations at the Stretford End.

It is a goal, and a game, that will go down in Old Trafford folklore and be retold for United fans for years to come, but team-mate Rashford believes that the performance will also make a positive impact on Amad's career in the near future.

Speaking to ITV1 after the game, our no.10 said: "I'm happy for him. He's been working hard this year and he's probably not had the opportunities that we would have wished.

"But listen, if he wants to have more opportunities, there's not better way to prove it than nights like tonight."

It was a sentiment that was echoed by manager Ten Hag in his post-match press conference with journalists inside Old Trafford following the game.

"I'm so happy for him," the Dutchman said. "And so that is one of the players who had huge setbacks this season, having bad injury and returning from it.

"But then we turn into a team where [there is] a lot of competition in his position, he doesn't always get the times to play he deserves, by his training performances.

"Then he's coming on and then he shows his contribution by scoring a goal. But we know he can do it."

With Amad having made just four appearances this season, the boss wanted to reiterate his belief that the young forward has the talent to make vital contributions as he did on Sunday.

Ten Hag continued: "We know he has that key moment where he can decide a game. And so I'm very pleased, that he got the winner."

Amad will be hoping to make a major contribution to the remainder of the campaign, as the Reds look to push for a UEFA Champions League spot and pursue FA Cup glory.
