Rashford scores for England but is injured

The 21-year-old notched his seventh goal for Gareth Southgate's side before being hurt while chasing another one in Guimaraes. Although he soldiered on until the interval, he was withdrawn and replaced by Tottenham's Harry Kane. Matthijs De Ligt equalised and Jesse Lingard was denied a potential winner by VAR after seemingly scoring in the 83rd minute. Instead, the Dutch won 3-1, thanks to an own goal by Kyle Walker and a Quincy Promes effort in extra-time.

The opening goal was all Rashford's own work. He harried De Ligt, the highly rated Ajax defender, into a mistake and was brought down by the youngster inside the box. It was a clear penalty and the centre-back received a yellow card.

Showing the same composure he displayed when converting in the World Cup shoot-out with Colombia and the dying seconds of United's Champions League knockout tie at Paris Saint-Germain, he had no qualms about taking on the responsibility with regular penalty-taker Kane on the bench.

As Dutch keeper Jasper Cillesen dived to his right, the Reds forward produced an ice-cool finish from the spot, sending the ball rolling into the opposite corner of the net.

The 32nd-minute effort boosted England but they were not resting on their laurels as Rashford touched the ball to Jadon Sancho and received a return pass, following some neat skill by the Borussia Dortmund winger.

Just as he looked to pull the trigger and double the lead, our homegrown product was halted by a strong, but fair, challenge by Denzel Dumfries. Despite initial thoughts that another penalty could be awarded, the PSV Eindhoven defender got the ball first. Nonetheless, it left Rashford nursing a sore ankle and, although he played on until the break, he did not reappear for the second half.

Reds midfielder Lingard came on as a substitute in the 60th minute for Sancho but the Netherlands levelled matters when De Ligt rose to power home a header from a corner in the 73rd minute.

It looked like Lingard had won it with seven minutes left, as he latched onto Ross Barkley's through ball to finish clinically past Cillesen, and the celebrations continued for some time until a stoppage to check VAR ultimately ruled he was offside by the slenderest of margins.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Lingard but, undeterred, he glided through the Dutch defence in stoppage time, only to guide his bending shot the wrong side of the far post.

However, the Netherlands went ahead in extra-time when John Stones was dispossessed by ex-Red Memphis Depay and, although Jordan Pickford saved, Promes's rebound went in off Walker as the pair slid in together to meet the loose ball. More sloppy defending, this time by Barkley, gifted Memphis the ball in the England box and he squared for Promes to power in the clincher.

Ronald Koeman's side go through to the final on Sunday, with England facing Switzerland in the third/fourth-place play-off earlier the same day.

It remains to be seen if Rashford will be fit enough to play.
