Rashford talks us through his solo strike

Our no.10 was on the scoresheet in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Championship side Burnley at Old Trafford, with a quite brilliant solo goal in the second half to apply some breathing space for Erik ten Hag's team.

He told club media exactly how it all unfolded. “I was dribbling, just to try and entice one of them [Burnley defenders] to come out. 

“I wanted to play it to Antony, but I think his run was a little bit early or me lifting my head up was a bit late.”

He added: “When I did lift my head up, I saw a gap, and I think he [Antony] was offside anyway so I thought ‘I’m just going to go for it’ and see if I can create an opportunity.”

The finish was a clinical one, into the far corner, wide of Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Clarets' goal as he marked his first outing since the World Cup in style.

A place in the last eight is important for the club as we strive to win some silverware in Ten Hag's opening season in charge.

“It’s massively important [for us to progress] because I feel like the year when we won it [2017], it just pushed us,” he told MUTV's Stewart Gardner. “We were chasing that feeling again. 

“It does a whole lot for your confidence, and for your desire, to keep winning so it’ll be massive for us to try to win that, and all the players and staff are giving everything to do that.”  

Rashford, who rejoined the squad over the last week, after being with England in Qatar for the World Cup, was pleased with the win as the Reds returned to action.

“Very happy [with the victory]. I think the lads that didn’t go to the World Cup trained really well and they’ve had some tough games and they’re really fit; and from the last couple of days in training, from the lads that have been away, we’ve come back in and the standard has been really high and that’s what we need.” 

He continued: “I’m pleased with the training that we’ve had and with the game today. We can kick on now and keep winning games of football because that’s what is important.” 

He also looked ahead to the Christmas schedule, which will see the Reds play another two games before the turn of the new year.

“It’s going to be a busy period, but less busy than what we’re used to. It’s good that we have such good competition for places and high-quality players as well.

“We’re going to use it as a strength and use it to push each other forward; when you’ve got a lot of fixtures, it’s one aspect that you definitely need.”
