Thomas: Bring on Scotland

Monday 16 August 2021 10:22

Manchester United Women's forward Martha Thomas is looking forward to continuing pre-season work with a week-long training camp in Scotland this week.

The Reds will head north of the border to carry on building up towards the new Women’s Super League campaign on the training pitch, while also facing Rangers in our third pre-season friendly of the summer on Thursday (19 August).

Prior to the trip, United have already drawn with Liverpool and beaten Aston Villa at Carrington, with all focus now firmly on the week in Scotland, according to Thomas.

The Reds have arranged another pre-season friendly, against Rangers.

The Scottish international expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to work in familiar surroundings with her new team-mates, having joined the Reds last month.

“[I’m] really excited yeah. I think it will just be good to get away with the girls, new scene and it’s just full focus on football when you do that.

“So, I think it will be a really good week and a good test against a top team in Scotland [Rangers], so we’re looking forward to it and it’s always just building until the beginning of the season.”
Thomas was speaking after our most recent outing, a 2-0 win over Villa in the second game of pre-season.

The forward netted the opener in the victory, her first goal in a United shirt, and she says it was a top afternoon all round for the Reds.

“[I’m] very pleased. [It’s] always good to get off on the mark and hopefully we just build from there. It was a strong performance from the girls which tops it off.

“Pre-season game, fitness in the legs, tough competition, good team, so we’re happy to get the win, good result for us, but the main thing is just getting minutes and building from that.”

Speaking after the win versus Villa, it was the first time Thomas had caught up with club media since the day she signed for the club.

So, our new no.9 gave the lowdown on how her first few weeks at United have gone.

“I’m absolutely loving it, it’s been a good few weeks,” she said.

“I’m really enjoying myself on the pitch, off the pitch, so zero complaints from me.

“We’ve got a really good culture that we’re building. I think the culture was already strong so [Marc Skinner] coming in and the new players coming in has strengthened that and I think we’re all really excited to kick on this season.”
