Mason Greenwood

What did Mason think of his Burnley brace?

Mason Greenwood has detailed the factors that led to both of his goals against Burney in Sunday’s 3-1 victory.

The forward’s brace helped Manchester United pick up all three Premier League points, with Edinson Cavani adding a late strike to conclude proceedings.

But it was Mason’s goals that helped to swing the game at Old Trafford, with the first coming from a free-flowing counter-attack within minutes of the second period kicking off.

Marcus Rashford started it off when he flew past Matthew Lowton on the left flank and then picked out Bruno Fernandes in the centre. The Portuguese midfielder had the presence of mind to dummy the ball and let it run through to Mason, who coolly slotted it past Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Double goalscorer Greenwood reflects on a job well done, including what went on in the build-up to his first strike...

“Half an assist for Rashy, half for Bruno,” Greenwood jokingly told club media after the game. “It was a great run from Rashy and Bruno is smart, intelligent. I gave him a shout and he left it for me to shoot.”

As for the second, with the scores tied at 1-1, Mason cut inside onto his left foot inside the box and looked to again guide the ball into the back of the net. However, a significant deflection from Jack Cork sent the shot in another direction, wrongfooted Peacock-Farrell and ended up sliding past him and into the goal.

“Yeah, definitely my goal,” Mason assured MUTV’s Stewart Gardner. “I cut inside and shot and we were talking about the keeper’s positioning before the game about his near post. I tried to do that and it deflected and went in.”
That goal means he has now netted 15 in the Premier League – the joint-highest for the club as a teenager, along with Wayne Rooney.

“Not bad company to be in, but I want to overtake him, hopefully,” said the attacker.

“I knew my goals would come as I said in past interviews,” he continued. “I kept my mentality and I knew chances would come and I just have to keep focused and be ready on the pitch when the chances come.”

The extended highlights of Sunday’s victory over the Clarets are now available…

It was a tough encounter against the Clarets and Mason believes United’s ability to take all three points is evidence of just how much the side have improved over the course of the season.

“Yeah we got there in the end. Burnley play well here, as we’ve seen in recent years, but we came out on top and got the three points.”

“The fitness and the mentality, we’ve got it all here. It’s starting to show in the games that we’re finishing games off now and comfortably beat teams.”
