Man-of-the-Match Mason breaking records

Sunday 15 December 2019 17:12

Mason Greenwood was voted our Man of the Match after the 1-1 draw with Everton at Old Trafford and his equaliser sparked a number of notable statistics.

The 18-year-old slammed a Daniel James pass past Jordan Pickford after an own goal by Victor Lindelof threatened to hand all three points to the Merseysiders.

It means Mason is our youngest scorer in a Premier League match at Old Trafford since Federico Macheda's famous winner against Aston Villa in April, 2009.

The seventh strike of Greenwood's season means he is second top scorer for the Reds, behind Marcus Rashford, and it followed up his brace against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Opta have also revealed the only other teenagers to hit the net more often in all competitions, playing in one of Europe's top five leagues in 2019/20, are Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho and Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli.

Greenwood earned a second successive star-man accolade for his efforts, beating off competition from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James to top the poll in our Official App.

"Mason Greenwood is different class in and around the box," manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Sky Sports. "You're not surprised when he scores goals. It's fitting that it should be an Academy player who scores in the 4,000th match [in a row in which United have fielded an youth-team product] and it makes it hard for me to leave him out."

"It was a great finish again," added captain Harry Maguire. "It was pretty similar to his goal in midweek [against AZ Alkmaar] to be honest. He is a special talent. He is a young boy, he is working hard in training, he needs to keep his head down and not get carried away. I am sure he is going to have a big future at this club. We are lucky to have him.”

ESPN journalist Mark Ogden also praised Greenwood, cautiously likening his style to a former United striker. "You can see why the Robin van Persie comparisons are there to be honest," the reporter said. "He walks like him, he moves like him, he has got a left foot like him. You don't want to make too many comparisons, but the way he hits the ball and puts them in the net is like Robin van Persie. If he scores as many goals as he did then United have got a good prospect."
