Mason Greenwood wins monthly award

Manchester United's prolific young striker Mason Greenwood has been named the Premier League 2 Player of the Month for April.

The 17-year-old is the first Red to scoop the award after taking his goal tally to 30 in all competitions for the club in 2018/19.

Despite being the youngest of the five-man shortlist for the trophy, Mason came out on top after consideration from the panel, following his exploits throughout the month for Ricky Sbragia's side.

The centre-forward set up Nishan Burkart's effort in the 1-1 draw with West Brom on his maiden appearance at Old Trafford, crossing superbly from the right, and followed it up with a superb display at Newcastle United's St James' Park.

He again assisted the opening goal for Burkart and also converted a wonderful free-kick during a 5-0 success for the Reds. In the final fixture of the season for the Under-23s, he netted against Wolves with a fine first-time finish and was unlucky not to be awarded another goal when a shot late on appeared to cross the line before being cleared.

The other contenders for April's award were former United Academy youngster Daniel Butterworth, now with Blackburn Rovers, Tyrese Francois (Fulham), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Liam Cullen (Swansea City) and Ryan Giles (Wolves).

The previous monthly winners this season are Danny Loader (Reading), Oliver Skipp (Tottenham), Josh Barrett (Reading), Aaron Connolly (Brighton), Josh Knight (Leicester City), Kazaiah Sterling (Tottenham), Morgan Rogers (West Brom) and Lewis Gibson (Everton).

Congratulations to Mason on achieving the personal accolade!
