Mount and Zirkzee savour comeback victory

Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee were both on the scoresheet as Manchester United came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

After Jean Philippe-Mateta’s first-half penalty, the Reds had work to do going into the second half, but produced a fine display following the restart, so much so that we had turned the scoreline on its head by just after the hour mark.

Zirkzee slammed home a brilliant effort on the bounce, from a seemingly impossible angle, within 10 minutes of the half-time restart, and Mount showed similar brilliance only moments later by curling underneath the wall, after Bruno Fernandes had layed off a free-kick into his path.

But speaking to TNT Sports after full-time, the pair spoke of positive individual feelings for differing reasons, following their exploits in the capital.

After netting for the first time in the Premier League since last December, Zirkzee said: “A great feeling, it’s always a good feeling to score.

“But most importantly, it just got us back in the game. This guy [Mount] scored a pretty good goal as well!

“It was all about three points today and I'm just very happy that we got them, it's very important.”

When asked about his spell without a domestic goal, Zirkzee said he has been thankful for the support of boss Ruben Amorim, his team-mates and coaching staff alike.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and you have to perform,” he continued. “If you don’t score for a long time, it can get to you, but I’m surrounded by great players, great people, and we help each other every day. They made it quite easy for me.

“Today was just a reward I think for patience, hard work, trying to be consistent, and I’m just thankful to them, the manager as well, staff, everyone. [It’s] a good environment.”

The Reds return to winning ways by ending Crystal Palace's incredible home record.

Meanwhile, for Mount, it wasn’t just finding the target – and, ultimately, what proved to be the winning goal – that gave him particular satisfaction from our trip to south London.

It was the first time our no.7 had completed 90 minutes in a Premier League match for the Reds, which he acknowledged himself in his interview.

“I’m feeling good,” he said. “The win obviously was massive today, but also for me to play the full game. I haven’t done that in a while so I’ve been feeling really, really good recently, no problems.

“I’m enjoying my football and when you have days like this in front of the fans like this, it makes it all worth it.”

He also explained that the Reds were keen to respond from the disappointment against Everton last time out, and that feeling was reinforced at the break when we were still trailing to Mateta’s opener.

“We’ve not found it easy away from home this season, obviously a very difficult result in the last game, so we knew we needed to bounce back and that’s what we spoke about before the game.

“I thought we showed good character to come back after [being] 1-0 down first half, so it was about reacting in the changing room second half, and I thought we did that really well. We came out [in the second half] and we were at it.”
