Mason Mount has offered an insight into why he decided to move from Chelsea to Manchester United.

The England international was officially unveiled as the Reds' new no.7 on Wednesday, becoming Erik ten Hag's latest recruit, ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Beaming with pride, Mason conducted his first interview as a United player with MUTV's Helen Evans.

When asked about his decision to trade London for Manchester, the 24-year-old said it wasn't a difficult choice for him.

"I think, over the last several months, it became clear that I wasn't in the plans moving forward [at Chelsea] and, once I knew that United were involved, my decision was made up," he explained.

"It’s a massive club with huge, iconic players that have played here.

"I wanted to be a part of that from from the beginning. And obviously getting in early, ready for pre-season to start, was a main objective of mine as well."

Mount, a Champions League winner, is optimistic for United's upcoming campaign and hopes he can help the Reds kick on and achieve further success under Ten Hag - starting in pre-season.

"The most important thing for me was getting there, being ready on day one and being able to obviously meet all the players, the manager, and get working," he added.

"We've got a big season ahead and we want to win trophies, we want to be successful. So, yeah, it was really big for me to be here on day one and get going straight away."

We announced on Wednesday that Mason would join an illustrious list of Reds to have donned the iconic no.7 shirt, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and David Beckham treading that path before him.

The midfielder says he's thrilled to join United, and can't wait to begin what he hopes will be a very successful career at the club.

"So many iconic players [have played for United]," he said.

"They've played for this club and, watching them as a youngster and also being a fan of them, it's very special to obviously now be here.

"This is what I worked a long, long time for as a little kid, for this moment here, and, going forward into the future, it's so exciting for myself."
