Watch Mason Mount don his United shirt number for the very first time...

Worn by United legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, our no.7 shirt is one of the most significant in our club's history.

Mason has previously had this shirt number during his time in Chelsea's Under-23s and for England, but the 2023/24 season will be the first time the 24-year-old has worn it in senior club football.

WHO WORE THE 7 BEFORE MOUNT?

United's no.7 is considered to be one of the most iconic shirts in the world.

Mount will become the latest Red to wear it in the Premier League era, after Ronaldo occupied the shirt during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns. Cristiano also wore it during his first stint at the club between 2003 and 2009.

Between Ronaldo's two periods at the club, Michael Owen (2009-12), former captain Antonio Valencia (2012-13), Angel Di Maria (2014-15), Memphis (2015-17), Alexis (2017-20) and Edinson Cavani (2020-21) all wore no.7 for United.

Beckham is another great who has worn the no.7 shirt, donning it from 1997 to 2003. David was our no.7 when we won the Treble in 1999.

Beckham inherited the shirt from the mercurial Frenchman, Cantona, who played a key role in our inaugural Premier League triumph in 1992/93 and scored some crucial goals in our history, such as his winning volley in the 1996 FA Cup final against Liverpool.

Cantona, complete with his iconic rolled up collar, was the Reds' no.7 between the 1992/93 and 1996/97 seasons, transforming the club - and the Premier League - in the process.

Best famously wore 7 in the late 1960s and and early 1970s, winning the Ballon d'Or in 1968 - the same year he helped United win our first-ever European Cup.

NEW CLUB, NEW NUMBER

For the past five years, Mason wore the no.19 shirt for Chelsea. The last time he donned the no.7 in any capacity was in the 2020/21 season, playing for England.

This isn't the first time Mount has been issued the 7 at club level, however, with the midfielder wearing it for Chelsea's Under-23s during the 2016/17 season. Chelsea's youngsters won the Under-18 Premier League that term, as well as lifting a second consecutive FA Youth Cup.

Mount therefore has history of winning silverware with this number and he will be hoping to add to that success as the Reds' latest no.7.

Good luck and welcome to the club, Mason!
