Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 3

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup, following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Reds came out on top in last season's final of course but this time it was the same opponents who reigned supreme.

First-half strikes from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall set the Magpies on their way, before Joe Willock’s goal on the hour mark all but sealed the victory.

Defeat this evening means our cup run comes to a premature end, rendering us unable to retain the trophy we lifted at Wembley eight months ago.

FIRST HALF

Wanting to right the wrongs of Sunday’s derby defeat to Manchester City, the Reds emerged onto the Old Trafford turf with a point to prove. For the opening 15 minutes or so, Ten Hag’s men controlled the game and kept our opposition penned inside their own half.

Casemiro went on to register the first shot of the game to cap off a promising start, but his effort was gathered comfortably by Martin Dubravka between the sticks.

The Magpies soon grew into the game, with Matt Ritchie registering their first effort on goal, but it flew wide of the mark. The away end would not have to wait long to see their team score, however, with first-half substitute Miguel Almiron firing them ahead after being played through on goal by Tino Livramento.
Chasing the game, United surged forward in search of a way back into things as Alejandro Garnacho fizzed a dangerous ball into the front post but Mason Mount poked his effort wide of Dubravka’s goal. Mount was involved once again minutes later, as Diogo Dalot stood the ball up in the box, but the Englishman was penalised for handball, resulting in a Newcastle free-kick.

Despite our efforts to get back on level terms, the visitors doubled their lead in the approach to half-time through left-back Lewis Hall. After failing to stop the attack, the defender hit a headed clearance on the volley, which bounced through a sea of bodies and ultimately into the bottom corner of Andre Onana’s goal.

United had a handful of chances to half the deficit before the interval, the first being Dalot dragging an effort wide before Mount forced Dubravka into a crucial save. Ultimately, though, we ended the half trailing by two goals.

SECOND HALF

A double change at the break saw the introduction of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabat, with the former injecting a new lease of life into the attacking play with some slick link-ups down the right. He very nearly set up a goal for Anthony Martial at the near post, but a last-ditch challenge prevented a dream start to the second half for the Reds.

We followed that up with a handful of chances from distance, the first of which saw Antony blaze an effort over the bar before Amrabat followed suit, failing to trouble Dubravka in the opposing net.

On the hour mark, despite United’s promising restart, Howe’s side struck once more to increase their advantage to three. Willock’s driving run through the middle of the park saw him create the space for a shot, cushioning his effort into the bottom corner and all but securing the victory for the visitors with 30 minutes still to play.

With Newcastle three goals to the good, the game reached somewhat of an impasse with neither side able to create any clear-cut chances in the aftermath, the most notable effort coming 15 minutes later when Sean Longstaff’s volley curled just wide of the post.

Though the Reds persevered in attack, it was to no avail as we were unable to mount a comeback in front of the Stretford End, with our Carabao Cup campaign coming to an early end this term.
