Ella Toone celebrates her goal against Arsenal

Report: Arsenal 2 United Women 3

Saturday 19 November 2022 20:08

Manchester United earned three huge WSL points after beating Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

Skinner's side took the lead just before half time, courtesy of Ella Toone. United's no.7 was at the back post to meet Hayley Ladd's looping cross, slotting into an empty net after Manuela Zinsberger missed her attempt at intercepting it.

Frida Maanum levelled for the hosts immediately after the break, as her effort took a significant deflection off Maya Le Tissier to beat Mary Earps. The Gunners took the lead with 20 minutes to go after Laura Wienroither finished off Katie McCabe's sublime cross.

Just when it looked like Arsenal may collect all three points, Millie Turner's thumping header from Katie Zelem's free-kick pulled the Reds level. And in the most dramatic of fashions, Alessia Russo's stoppage-time winner from yet another Zelem set piece would see us snatch all three points and end Arsenal's long unbeaten run.

Before United and Arsenal meet again in the WSL, enjoy the best bits from November's thrilling reverse fixture...

The opening 45 minutes of the game was an utterly dominant display by Marc Skinner's side.

Leah Galton came close to giving the Reds the lead in the opening 10 minutes. Russo's interception saw Toone latch onto the ball and play in Galton, but her effort from a tight angle was saved by Zinsberger.

Galton was played in yet again just five minutes later, but a quick defensive recovery saw it bundled behind for a corner. Le Tissier came close to heading into the top corner from the resulting set piece, but it landed just on top of Zinsberger's goal.
The home side struggled to create anything clear-cut in the first half, with many of their attacks coming from long balls over the top to Stina Blackstenius, but the Swedish forward couldn't capitalise on them.

Our breakthrough came in the approach to half-time, with Toone on target to put us ahead. The move began on the wing, where Russo held the ball up well and bided her time, waiting for the overlapping run of Ladd. The Welsh midfielder lifted the ball into the box where Zinsberger missed it, leaving Toone alone at the back post to slot into an empty net.

The start of the second half was not the best of starts for the Reds, allowing Arsenal a route back into the game through Maanum.

A quick turnover in possession allowed the Norwegian plenty of space to run into before unleashing her shot on target, which took an unfortunate but significant deflection off Le Tissier to fly past a stranded Earps in goal.

Jonas Eidevall's side then showed a stark contrast between their first and second-half outings, with the Gunners enjoying a lot more of the ball after the equaliser.

Millie Turner levelled the score for United late on.

And their patience in coming into the game would pay off in the 73rd minute when Wienroither would give them the lead. An impressive full-back to full-back move saw Katie McCabe's curling cross into United's area finished off at the back post by Wienroither, who showed impeccable control to guide the shot beyond Earps.

Just when it looked like the Gunners would see out a win in front of over 40,000 inside the Emirates Stadium, a free-kick against the run of play would change that narrative. Zelem whipped in the ball and Turner was the first to meet it with a thumping header onto the crossbar that dropped in to level the scores at 2-2.

But that wasn't the end of a dramatic showing at the Emirates, as Russo's stoppage-time winner from Zelem's corner would see the Reds snatch all three points at the death, taking the Reds onto 18 and level with league-leading Arsenal.
