Report: West Ham 2 United 1

Sunday 27 October 2024 16:14

A controversial late penalty consigned Manchester United to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen converted from 12 yards in stoppage time, after David Coote adjudged Matthis de Ligt to have fouled Danny Ings in the box, following an extended VAR consultation.

The Reds had only just restored parity, with Casemiro nodding home from close range in response to Crysencio Summerville’s 74th-minute opener.

United dominated for large spells, especially in the first half when we missed several good opportunities, but have now lost four Premier League games this season.

Garnacho runs clear, on his 100th appearance for United.

FIRST HALF – REDS SOMEHOW KEPT AT BAY

The Reds flew straight to London from Istanbul in the aftermath of Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce, to reduce the time spent travelling between games.

We looked lively for it in the early stages too, with Alejandro Garnacho – on his 100th United appearance – twice going close in the opening 10 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes was the provider on both occasions having been restored to the line-up after suspension, as Alejandro rattled the crossbar from our skipper’s sidefooted pass with his first effort and then shot just wide of the far post when played through down the left.

The two combined once again to feed Rasmus Hojlund, who drew a close-range save from Lukasz Fabianski and the barrage continued when Fernandes evaded his marker and connected with Casemiro’s lofted pass – unfortunately, he couldn’t keep the header down.

Some sharp passes were being played by Erik ten Hag’s men and another, by Noussair Mazraoui, almost found Marcus Rashford with a clear route on goal, but the ball never quite bounced right for our no.10 and Fabianski smothered.

West Ham started to establish themselves in the contest, looking most threatening from set pieces, although Lucas Paqueta’s looping header failed to trouble Andre Onana.

But the visitors were still on top and missed another great opportunity just after the half-hour mark, when Diogo Dalot evaded the onrushing Fabianski but lifted his shot over the bar with the Hammers’ defenders frantically sliding in to close the angle.

The in-form Christian Eriksen created two more chances as the half drew to a close. Edson Alvarez nodded on to his own crossbar when dealing with the Dane's inswinging corner, and Fabianski kept Casemiro’s header out as the Reds were left wondering how the game was still goalless at the interval.

Eriksen created several chances from set pieces in the first half.

SECOND HALF – HAMMERS WIN IT LATE ON

Julen Lopetegui responded to West Ham’s slow first half by making a trio of changes, but the first shots of the second 45 fell our way.

Garnacho’s attempt from Rashford’s cross was reminiscent of the Argentinian’s goal against Brentford, but this time the strike hit the side netting, while Fabianski was on hand to parry away Hojlund’s long-distance sighter.

The home side were improving though, with Antonio curling wide of Onana’s far post and Mazraoui having to stretch to prevent Bowen feeding Summerville when the Irons looked to counter.

Emerson then passed up the opportunity to convert following clever work by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as the volume in East London started to increase.

After a lull in proceedings, permeated by Max Kilman’s strong tackle when under pressure from Amad, the former should perhaps have hit the target when a corner found him free in the box, but Summerville was soon on hand to poke home from a mishit by fellow substitute Ings.

Summerville provided an impact off the bench.

With a quarter of an hour play, there was still time for a response and Amad tested Fabianski’s reflexes, moments after the Pole had punched clear with Hojlund lurking.

Joshua Zirkzee was introduced for Eriksen to bolster the attack and the change paid immediate dividends, the Dutchman nodding Dalot’s flick on to the forehead of Casemiro, who equalised with his first goal of the campaign.

But the Hammers retook the lead, after referee David Coote was asked to go to the screen and review De Ligt’s coming together in the box with Ings - he'd initially waved away the former Southampton striker's shouts for a foul.

A significant delay ensued, during which 12 minutes of additional time were signalled, before Coote pointed to the spot - much to the chagrin of the Reds' defenders - and Bowen tucked the penalty low and to the right, beyond the dive of Onana.

As the clock ticked towards 100 minutes and Ten Hag’s side channelled our efforts into finding a second leveller, Emerson broke clear but shot straight at Onana, while Zirkzee saw an effort blocked.

But the whistle soon blew to end another frustrating visit to Stratford and United now have to reset before a run of four home fixtures, starting with Leicester City’s visit in the Carabao Cup this Wednesday.

Joshua Zirkzee and Casemiro celebrate the latter's equaliser.
