U21s: Manchester City v Manchester United

Sunday 19 March 2023 14:40

Manchester United's Under-21s lost 6-0 to Manchester City in Sunday's Premier League 2 encounter at the Academy Stadium.

Micah Hamilton's goal and a first-half Will Dickinson brace gave City a 3-0 lead before the interval, with defender Sonny Aljofree shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Oscar Bobb inside the opening half-hour.

The hosts continued to make the extra man count in the second period, with Bobb, Kian Breckin and Jaden Heskey all scoring on a disappointing afternoon for the young Reds.

Despite competing well during the opening exchanges, United fell behind after just seven minutes, as Adedire Mebude's low cross into the penalty area was tapped home by Hamilton to make it 1-0.

Five minutes later, Mebude was at it again as he drove at the young Reds' backline, this time picking out Dickson who poked home his side's second from close range.

Ever-threatening midfielder Bobb then picked up the ball on the halfway line before advancing through on goal. The City man had his legs clipped from behind by Aljofree, with referee Kimura Hiroyuki given no choice but to give our defender his marching orders.

A neat one-two between Bobb and Tomas Galvez helped the latter advance down the left soon after, with Dickson on hand to notch his second and the host's third midway through the half.

Dermot Mee did well to deny City a fourth before the whistle sounded, saving well to stop Mebude from getting in on the act.

As the second half began, Mark Dempsey's side had the perfect chance to grab a goal back through Dan Gore. The midfielder burst forward from deep inside his own half, only for his left-footed strike to whizz just inches wide of the post.

City then again started to dictate the tempo by spreading the ball from left to right, with Zidane Iqbal and Tom Huddlestone performing well in midfield to keep the home side at bay.

Substitute Heskey's low drive into the area was tapped home by Bobb as City added a fourth goal after 72 minutes, before a neat corner routine involving Mebude and Breckin enabled the latter to add a fifth goal late on.

Manni Norkett was introduced as United tried to stretch the game in search of a consolation, but Mebude was involved again to help City make it 6-0, as his shot at goal was blocked by Huddlestone, before Heskey smashed home to complete the scoring.
