Report: United Women 3 Brann 0 (agg 3-1)

Thursday 18 September 2025 21:05

Manchester United have made history, securing qualification to the main stage of the Women's Champions League for the first time after beating Brann 3-0 at Leigh Sports Village (3-1 on aggregate).

United found ourselves trailing 1-0 heading into the home leg, despite being the better team in Bergen last week.

The Reds quickly flipped the tie on its head though, with Elisabeth Terland scoring twice within the opening 15 minutes.

After dominating possession, Terland completed her hat-trick in the second half and the visitors had no reply.

FIRST HALF

United showed our attacking intent straight from kick-off. Our first opportunity opened up within minutes as Ella Toone floated in a lovely cross towards the back post but it was a Brann defender who rose to head away the danger.

Brann showed their strengths with a counterattack, but it fizzled out before they could get a shot away thanks to a perfectly timed tackle from Maya Le Tissier.

United dominated possession and pressed well and following further chances for Jess Park and Toone, we got the reward through Elisabeth Terland.
Riviere's initial cross found defender Mia Authen, whose poor clearance was straight into the path of Terland. Our no.10 struck first time, finding the top corner less than 10 minutes into the game.

The Reds kept up the intensity, and less than three minutes later, Terland secured her brace. Julia Zigiotti Olme's corner was delivered to the back post where Terland was well placed to head past Selma Panengstuen.

We were now winning 2-1 on aggregate but kept the pressure on; Melvine Malard almost caught the keeper out with her press and Zigiotti forced a fantastic save from the visiting shot-stopper, who tipped the ball round the post to prevent the Reds running away with the game.

Just before half-time, Terland saw a chance to get her hat-trick. Malard and Anna Sandberg worked hard to win back possession deep into the attacking half and nicked it from the feet of the defender, into the path of Terland, whose strike curled round the keeper and rattled the woodwork.

Skinner's side didn't have it all our own way in the first half, the visitors looked threatening from a series of corners, but the Reds maintained composure to defend our lead.

SECOND HALF

United were desperate to put the game to bed, while Terland was desperate for her hat-trick and she found the back of the net not long after the restart but the whistle had already gone. After what looked like a perfectly timed run, she wriggled away from the defender but the ball bounced awkwardly and brushed her hand before she placed it past the visiting keeper.

The Reds found the goal again following a corner but once more it wouldn't count as the ref blew for a foul. Malard saw a chance whistle over the bar and a shot saved by the keeper as we turned the screws inside a noisy Leigh Sports Village.

After surviving the opening 10 minutes of the second half without conceding, Brann looked to be growing in confidence and the Reds allowed them a bit more possession. However, it was short-lived as United countered quickly and Malard's pass found Terland who wrapped up her hat-trick as she poked past the Brann shot-stopper.

Still the Reds attacked, with Park coming close to making it four and Fridolina Rolfo brushing the top of the crossbar shortly after coming on for her home debut.

The home crowd were furious after what looked like a nasty challenge on Riviere went unpunished. The defender didn't require any treatment on the pitch immediately after but was moving gingerly as Brann looked to mount a comeback.

Skinner was forced into a change as he looked to protect Riviere from further injury and secure progression to the Champions League league phase. Though the sting had been taken out of the game, the Reds still dominated possession and managed the closing stages well.

The win secures the Reds' place in the hat for Friday's Champions League draw. Attention quickly turns back to the league meanwhile, as United host Arsenal this weekend at Leigh Sports Village with tickets still available.
