U21s: Manchester United v Brighton & Hove Albion

Monday 08 April 2024 21:15

Manchester United's Under-21s were held to a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion in our latest Premier League 2 outing.

Our young Reds went in front shortly before the interval as Harry Amass's low cross into the area was steered home by Albion defender Ruairi McConville.

Despite United's best efforts in the second half, it was McConville himself who made amends at the right end, smashing home the visitors equaliser with 72 minutes played.

Amass and Ethan Wheatley went close to winning the encounter during the final stages but it remained level and the points were therefore shared.

Harry Amass is congratulated after his part in United's opening goal.
During a relatively quiet first period, Amass was proving a handful for Brighton to deal with and his shot with just 15 minutes played resulted in our first real opening of the game.

Moments before the interval, Travis Binnion's side did take the lead thanks to an own goal from McConville.

Sam Murray's driving run out of defence saw him tee-up Amass, who played the ball across the face of goal, forcing the Brighton captain to prod home into his own net.
Amass was again involved as the second half began, as the 17-year-old danced his way into the Brighton box before just missing the target with effort on goal.

It was then Amir Ibragimov's turn to drive at the Seagulls backline as he looked to contribute following his introduction.

Entering the penalty area, his shot was well blocked before the ball fell to Charlie McNeill who also saw his own strike charged down by the Brighton defence.

A looping corner from the left on 71 minutes brought the equaliser as McConville was found unmarked, smashing home past Dermot Mee from close range.

Mee made two fine saves to keep United in the game during the closing stages, denying Louis Flower on both occasions.
Our young Reds had Dermot Mee to thank after two fine saves in the closing stages at Leigh Sports Village.
