Manchester United's Under-21s beat Norwich City 5-3 in an entertaining affair at Carrow Road in Premier League 2.

Our young Reds went behind early on as Errol Mundle Smith opened the scoring after just six minutes before Ethan Williams restored parity midway through the first half.

Ethan Wheatley scored immediately after the second-half restart before Malachi Sharpe's neat finish made it 3-1 soon after.

Wheatley notched again after 71 minutes, with the Canaries hitting back twice through Dan Ogwuru and Finley Welch to set up a grandstand finish at 4-3.

But there was still time for Wheatley to complete his hat-trick and round off the scoring to ensure victory in the dying embers, as he tapped home into an empty net.

U21S HIGHLIGHTS | Ethan Wheatley scored a hat-trick in this entertaining 5-3 win at Norwich City...

Brandon Forbes's cross from the right gave Mundle Smith the easiest of tasks to open the scoring early on, with the 18-year-old duly obliging by tapping home past Hubert Graczyk.

But United weren't behind for long as Williams saw the ball fortuitously fall at his feet after Harry Amass had attempted to pick him out. Williams then drove into the Norwich box before smashing an effort into the roof of the net that beat Caleb Alsen to make it 1-1.

Wheatley replaced Ethan Ennis at the interval and wasted no time by notching just three minutes into the second half. Williams had done well out wide before picking out the Stockport-born forward who netted his first of the evening.

Two minutes later, the Reds had another, as Sharpe was handed possession in the middle of the park before combining well with Dan Gore. A neat one-two set Sharpe free before he tucked home our third.
Wheatley then scored again with just under 20 minutes remaining, with Ruben Curley turning provider on this occasion. His pass was well timed and thus his 18-year-old team-mate lofted the ball over the on-rushing Ansen to make it 4-1.

Then came late drama in Norfolk, as first Oguwu scored with a tap-in at the back post following Lucien Mahovo's teasing delivery. Welch then rasped an effort in the top corner for Norwich to ensure nerves were tested late on.

But with just seconds remaining, a breakaway attack from United resulted in Wheatley being left with the simplest of tasks to tap home into an empty net after City goalkeeper Ansen found himself forward late on.
Ethan Wheatley's second-half display was an impressive facet of our young Reds' display.
