Le Tissier up for WSL award

Wednesday 07 May 2025 12:00

Maya Le Tissier has been nominated for the Barclays' Women's Super League Player of the Year award.

The recognition of Maya is well deserved, at the end of her first season as captain of Manchester United Women.

Le Tissier took the armband over from Katie Zelem in the summer and has been an ever-present at the back for the Reds, as part of the league's meanest defence.

The 23-year-old has contributed to United keeping 13 clean sheets across our 21 league games so far - we've only conceded 10 goals in that time.

United Women secure Champions League qualification

The Reds have earned the chance to compete at the highest level next season.

United's solidity has played a massive role in our qualification for next season's Champions League.

That place in Europe was confirmed on Sunday, after the 2-2 draw with Manchester City at Old Trafford, and Le Tissier praised the collective effort after the final whistle.

“We’re so together, honestly – I feel like we’re unbreakable at times,” she said.

Now it's time for individual recognition though, and Le Tissier is competing against eight other names to claim the division's top solo prize.

Champions Chelsea have two nominees - left-back Sandy Baltimore and joint-leading scorer Aggie Beever-Jones - while Mariona Caldentey and Alessia Russo have been key for Arsenal and will be among the frontrunners for the award.

Most of the players on the list are attackers, with West Ham's Shekiera Martinez nominated after scoring 10 goals since returning from a loan at Freiburg in January.

Mary Fowler (Manchester City), Kiko Seike (Brighton) and Olivia Smith (Liverpool) are contending too.

You can cast your vote for Maya now, via the WSL's official website - please do so before noon on Friday 9 May, when the polls close.
