Do you know about the Duncan Edwards' memorial dinner?
A memorial dinner is to be held in Duncan Edwards’ honour on 21 February, to mark the 65th anniversary of his tragic passing following the Munich Air Disaster.
The group ‘Duncan Edwards United’ has been hosting ‘The Duncan Edwards Dinner’ since 2001, with the aim of celebrating the legacy of the legendary Red and the other Busby Babes that were cut down in their prime back in 1958.
This year’s event will be held at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley, and chief organiser Jim Cadman is inviting United fans everywhere to attend and support the commemorative evening.
“For over 20 years, our sole aim has been to promote the heritage of Duncan Edwards – both as a man and football legend – who gave so much to Manchester United FC, the England international team and to his hometown of Dudley,” says Cadman.
“Our most fervent wish in the short term is to create closer links with the fan base of Manchester United, and share with them the history, information and memorabilia about arguably the greatest player to have worn the red shirt of the world’s no.1 football club.
“For two decades, we have worked with our supporters and associates to build a comprehensive network of Duncan Edwards memorabilia – including programmes from almost every game that Duncan played in – plus a large selection of photographs, press cuttings, football publications and ephemera.”
All profits from the dinner will go towards the Duncan Edwards Peace Field Project, which saw the football pitch at Dudley’s Dell Stadium renamed ‘The Duncan Edwards Peace Field’ in 2021.
Each year, the ground also hosts an annual youth football tournament named The Duncan Edwards Peace Field Festival.
This year’s dinner will feature former United manager Ron Atkinson, plus special guests Allan Clarke and Dennis Mortimer. In attendance will be many other well-known names from the football world, plus former classmates and team-mates from Duncan’s youth.
