Carrick gives update on Shaw

Manchester United's caretaker manager Michael Carrick has provided an update on the fitness of Luke Shaw, after the defender failed to make the matchday squad for our Premier League game at Chelsea.

The 26-year-old missed our midweek trip to Villarreal in the Champions League following the knock to the head he suffered in the recent defeat at Watford.

But despite Shaw's best efforts, the Chelsea game came just too soon for his return, with Alex Telles selected in the starting XI to face Thomas Tuchel's league leaders.

Ahead of the match, Carrick spoke to club media and offered the latest on Shaw's situation.

Michael explains his four changes and why Luke Shaw isn't in the 20-man matchday squad...

“Luke obviously had the bang on the head [at Watford] and we were assessing him and he just wasn't quite right,” he explained.

“He didn't quite get fit enough in time for the game. So it's unfortunate for Luke, but it is what it is. We look forward to the game with what we've got for sure, and I think it will be a good one.”

There was better news elsewhere, however, as Mason Greenwood returned to the squad.

The teenager has been absent in recent weeks due to a bout of Covid-19, but was able to take a place on the bench at Chelsea.

Carrick made four changes to his starting XI, with Eric Bailly replacing the suspended Harry Maguire, and Nemanja Matic, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes stepping in for Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick explained those decisions to MUTV with the following:

“Well, I've got great options. It's a terrific squad to pick from. There's a few little tweaks and changes from the other night.

“The boys who have come out of the team have been terrific around the group – fantastic in and around the group and in and around the changing room, as the other boys were the other night. It's a real team effort, a real squad effort, and we're looking forward to the game.”
