Reds confirm additions to first-team staff

Manchester United can confirm two more appointments in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's new-look staff at the Aon Training Complex.

Former Reds defender Michael Clegg is the new first-team strength and power coach, while Ed Leng has been recruited as the first-team lead sports scientist. Confirmation of their arrivals follows last month's announcement that Richard Hartis has rejoined the club in the role of senior goalkeeping coach.

“We’ve got some ex-Manchester United people, even ex-players," Ole revealed in our exclusive pre-season interview.

"We’ve got Mike Clegg, who I played with. I worked under his dad [Mick] when he was a coach in the gym here.

"We’ve got Richard [Hartis] who I have worked with before for seven or eight years, so I’m really close to him.

"And Ed has come in as well, in that group of people. He's not a Man United guy but he has worked with Warren Joyce, who is of course a United guy, and I worked with him. They all know what the club is about and what I’m about. They are great people for me to bring in."

Clegg commented on Twitter: "It's an honour to be back at the club I love and one of the best clubs in the world. It's certainly the job of my dreams."

The 41-year-old made 16 appearances for United between 1996 and 2001 and played for England Under-21s. His CV includes a stint as Sunderland's strength and conditioning coach.

Leng was head of the sports-science department at Melbourne City in Australia, where he worked under former United Reserves coach Joyce. He has previously worked with Tottenham's Academy.

All six of Manchester United's pre-season games will be available to watch live on MUTV, including the clashes with Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
