New shirt numbers on show against Derby

Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton was among several Reds players sporting a new shirt number as he made his first appearance since re-joining the club against Derby County.

Although our official squad numbers are yet to be confirmed for the 2021/22 campaign, and any worn now are very much still subject to change, summer-signing Heaton donned number 22 as he got an impressive 45 minutes under his belt in our first pre-season friendly away at Pride Park.

The former United Academy player, who joined from Aston Villa, was in the same number as our former stopper Sergio Romero, after the Argentinian departed Old Trafford at the end of last season.

Anthony Elanga donned the no.36 at Pride Park.

Elsewhere, youngsters Anthony Elanga and Dylan Levitt, who like Heaton were part of the first-half team against the Rams, also turned out in new numbers.

19-year-old winger Elanga was wearing 36, after having played in 56 last term, while Levitt was in 35. The Wales midfielder had previously worn 63 when he made his first-team debut for the Reds in the Europa League against FC Astana in 2019.

Shola Shoretire was another player with a change of number, having appeared to have switched from 74 to 47 when he came on at the start of the second period.

Meanwhile 17-year-old forward Joe Hugill also came on at half-time to make his maiden appearance with the first team, with the number 52 on his back.

United’s official 2021/22 squad numbers will be confirmed in due course, before the campaign gets under way next month.
