Why Newport's boss is a massive Red

Newport County boss Graham Coughlan may be focused on trying to knock Manchester United out of the Emirates FA Cup this weekend but he has spoken of his long-lasting love affair with the Reds.

The Dubliner used to travel across the Irish Sea to watch United in action and remembers some tough times before Sir Alex Ferguson took charge of the club.

Having witnessed some of the greatest moments in our history, he admits it is a dream come true to come up against Erik ten Hag's men, with the fourth-round clash at Rodney Parade gaining plenty of media attention ahead of Sunday's 16:30 GMT kick-off.

"I followed United years ago, when they couldn't win an argument, never mind a game," Coughlan told the Daily Mail.

"It was tough being a follower at that time because Liverpool were dominating, and you had to go to school every day and just get hammered. They're going through a similar period now, like they experienced in the eighties, but they'll come through and get to the other side of it.

"I was there the last time they lifted a trophy, the League Cup [against Newcastle United, at Wembley, last season]. Me and the kids were there. I was there the last time they lifted the FA Cup.

"I've been to finals that they've lost. They gave me one of the best nights of my life in Barcelona. The FA Cup final in 1985. I was there when Liverpool beat them in the League Cup final in 1983. My missus will always accompany me when the big European games come around, the kids come with me for the league games."

Long-serving Newport player Scot Bennett is also a lifelong Red who cannot wait for the big occasion.

"All my family, apart from my dad, are United fans," said the County stalwart, quoted in the South Wales Argus.

"It was my gran who took me to my first game at Old Trafford. I've been up there a fair few times to watch them so, to play against them, is surreal.

"My first game was a Champions League tie on a Tuesday night, against Nantes, and David Beckham scored a free-kick. So I was very happy as he was my favourite player. I massively looked up to him and Paul Scholes was just unbelievable. Playing in midfield and seeing what he could do. You just idolise him, don't you?

"This weekend will be surreal and those of us that are United fans have been joking about playing for a draw to play at Old Trafford, and tick that box off as well!

"Hopefully, I'm picked and then it's either running around the field with Bruno Fernandes in midfield or trying to keep [Rasmus] Hojlund, [Marcus] Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho quiet."
