Norway bow out of Euro 2025
Norway bowed out of Euro 2025 at the quarter-final stage, as Italy struck late on in Geneva.
The Scandinavians were favourites to progress to the final, having secured maximum points in Group A.
While Celin Bizet and Elisabeth Terland were named on the bench, Lisa Naalsund started in midfield for Norway and was booked during a first half where the two sides had clear-cut chances but could not be separated.
Cristiana Girelli found the breakthrough after 50 minutes, when she ushered Sofia Cantore's cross into the back of the net.
2025/26: Day one
GalleryThe first set of United Women players reported to Carrington for pre-season training on Wednesday.
Ada Hegerberg had the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot when she was hauled down in the box, but the Lyon forward missed the target from 12 yards.
She made amends shortly afterwards, poking home from Maren Mjelde's long ball, by which time Terland had been thrown on to boost the Norwegian attack.
The contest looked to be heading towards extra-time, but there was a sting in the tail as Girelli found space at the back post to head home from another Cantore centre, as stoppage time approached.
So it's Italy who advance to set up a potential semi-final with England.
The holders take on Sweden in Zurich on Thursday evening.
